Swimming star? Pop star!
The Austrian Markus Rogan was 'the event' at the European short course championships in Vienna Presumably, Markus Rogan will be giving oboe concerts next, teaching brain surgery and discovering the sea route to India. At least one can't help thinking this when leafing through the Austrian daily newspapers these days, and continually being presented with the same contents - albeit with a different choice of words: Markus Rogan, Superstar.
After the swimming, the stage show : Rogan in his element.
The hype is immeasurable
Austria is crazy about him, everyone is his fan - and it is normally the ski world that is of more interest than the short course swimming championships that are currently taking place in Rogan's hometown of Vienna. The boys want to be like him, and the screeching girls are taking photographs until their thumbs are sore and won't be quiet until they have at least got hold of an autograph. Markus Rogan, 22 years old, must feel like a pop star. Each hand movement is captured by umpteen cameras, with each smile he harvests thunderous applause from the tiers of Vienna's almost sold-out Stadthalle. The hype is immeasurably great. |
